First off, for the past few days the area around SCRAP has turned into a construction zone due to a sewer pipe issue under the neighboring businesses.  We had to shut down the store today (Thursday) because there's a need to run pipes and drill holes through concrete, but we hope to be open again tomorrow.  Please call prior to coming down to make sure.  We are truly sorry for this inconvenience as it is completely out of our hands.

With that said, we did some spring cleaning last week and have filled the workshop room with items that MUST GO.  We're selling them for nearly nothing and giving much away for free.  Over the weekend there will be tables outside with free goodies.  Come on down and take it all away.

As promised, I have included a summary of the results from the survey from a few months back.  There is some great info in there that we are using to help shape our strategic goals and marketing plan.  One item we've implemented already: SCRAP WILL NOW BE OPEN UNTIL 8PM ON WEDNESDAYS.  More time to get your scrapping done.  We'll also be having workshops and scrapaholic anonymous meetings on those late nights.  More fun in the land o' SCRAP.

As you may have read in past email newsletters, SCRAP is having financial difficulties.  We have grants going out the door, but the turnaround times are long.  We know times are tough for everyone these days with fuel and food prices increasing daily.  We really pride ourselves on being an affordable resource in this community that is accessible to everyone no matter their income level.  Unfortunately, running a non-profit organization requires more money than we can bring in by selling cool art supplies for 25 cents per handful.  We do not want to raise our prices and so we turn to you, our supporters, to ask if you can contribute to our cause.  Become a member.  Ask your friends to become members.  Round up at the counter.  Write a letter to the editor of the Oregonian or an article for your local or school newspaper about how SCRAP has been a wonderful resource to you and your friends and family.  We need your support so that we can continue to support the arts community, the educational community and the environmental community of Portland.

Thanks for reading and supporting what we do.

SCRAP Spring Cleaning Super Clearance Sale
Now through the weekend.  Everything must go.  Really low prices and lots for FREE

New Extended Shop Hours starting April 30th
From the survey results, it was clear...our customers wanted to be able to satisfy their crafty needs more often than our hours would allow.  In an ideal world, SCRAP would be open every day of the week.  Unfortunately, at this point, that scenario does not fit with our current staffing allowances.

We understand that folks have trouble getting to SCRAP after work during the week, so we have decided to extend our hours on Wednesdays til 8pm.

Our new store hours:
Wednesday 11am to 8pm
Thursday - Saturday 11am to 6pm
Sunday 12 to 5pm

Finders Keepers Benefit for SCRAP
Help support SCRAP and have a good time at the Music Art Resource Collective (M.A.R.C.) event on May 11th called Finders Keepers, to be held at Liberty Hall - 311 N. Ivy st. This will be an evening of skillshare, music and reused fashion, and all proceeds from the door go directly to SCRAP! From 6pm-8pm there will be hands-on workshops including: bookbinding, stuffed animals, vinyl record bracelets and SCRAPpy accessories. Starting at 9pm there will be music by Sassparilla, and then Party Killer vs. Betacrack. See you and your SCRAPpy trash fashion there!

M.A.R.C. is a non-profit community project working to provide support and resources for those desiring to pursue their creative goals in this not-so-cheap society we live in. More information at http://www.myspace.com/marcportland.

Upcoming Marketing/Promotions Internships
We are in the process of creating two unpaid internships at SCRAP.

Social Networking Intern - We will be looking for someone to help create and maintain SCRAP profiles on social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Linked-In.  The ideal candidate would have knowledge of social networking sites, online marketing strategies, and excellent communication skills.  The intern might also be asked to research online social bookmarking and sharing tools such as del.icio.us and stumbleupon.

Marketing and Promotions Intern - This position will be primarily research based.  Duties will include
research on events, potential business donors, and publicity opportunities as well as work on creating and implementing a marketing plan.

Both positions will be approximately 10 -15 hours per week and you can work from home.  Again, these positions are not yet fully developed, but if you have any interest in either position, please send an email to joanna@scrapaction.org and we will send you a position description once they are confirmed.
